MASS MEDIA IN OUR LIFE
The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and
especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful
possibilities for education and entertainment. They also shape our views and
influence the way we see the world. There are a lot of different TV programs
and newspapers: a quiz show, a review, a commentary, an entertainment program
on TV and a quality newspaper (a broadsheet), a tabloid, a local paper.
Of course, not all TV programs
and newspapers report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV
reporters try to be fair and prove us with reliable information. It
is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to
be bad news. But people aren’t interested in ordinary events. That’s why, there
are so many programs and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies.
Good news doesn’t usually make headlines. Bad news does.
Some people say that
journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on peoples’ private
lives, they follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them, which
are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate
moments. The question is- should this be allowed? Do you remember hoe paparazzi
pursued Diana, Princess of Wales, to
the scene of her death in Paris on August 31, 1997? Who was guilty of this accident? It is quite
possible that journalists were, isn’t it?
The main course of news for
millions people is television. People like TV news because they can see
everything with their own eyes. And that’s an important advantage. Seeing as we
know is believing. Besides, it’s much more difficult for politicians to be in
front of the cameras than on the pages of a newspaper.
Still, many people prefer the
radio. It’s good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do
something about the house. Newspapers don’t react to events as TV, but they
usually provide us with extra details, comment and background information.
The Internet has become
another important source of
information. It’s main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as
things happen in real life and you don’t have to wait for news on TV.

Family problems
can seem overwhelming. Every family has problems once in a while. But sometimes
family conflict becomes too serious. Often, this is because of trouble of
understanding each other, changing expectations as you grow older or lack of
trust among family members. It might also be because your parents see things
differently from you since they are from a different generation. When conflicts
happen you might find yourself changing your behavior or reacting differently.
This is one way of showing your family that you dislike a situation. It may even make you feel like you have more
control over the situation. But your reactions might confuse your family and
distract them from the real problems. Try to have a talk with your family.
For example, if
you rebel against your overprotective parents by staying out late on a Saturday
night, they will get upset. Instead, if you talk to them about why you want to
go out, where you are going, who you’ll be with and how they can reach you,
they may learn to trust you to stay out later. Sometimes talking to your family
is to difficult. Talk to an adult you trust like a teacher, friend’s parent or
school counselor about your family problem.
1)
Do all
families have problems?
2)
Why do
some conflicts happen?
3)
Why is
it necessary to talk to your parents?

Love, The
Prisoner in Tower # 3
Dear Prisoner,
No.
Love,
Mom.
For days a time Sam's mother never came up
to her room. And then one day Sam would come home
from school and find the Condemned sign on her doorknob. Her mother had made the sign. It said: THIS ROOM IS CONDEMNED. ITS OWNER MAY NOT GO
ANYWHERE OR DO ANYTHING UNTIL THE PREMISES
ARE RESTORED TO NEETNESS. In other words, Sam was grounded until she cleaned her room.
It wasn't fair. She was always getting the
Condemned sign. Bradley hardly ever did. And
his room was really disgusting, with posters of rock stars and basketball stars and movie stars wearing tiny
bikinis covering every inch of his walls,
and even suspended from the ceiling. But, her mother pointed out, his floor was
clean. And his desk. That was all she cared about.
Sam had been imprisoned in her
room for three hours now. She sat on the floor, looking at everything she was
supposed to be putting away. It was possible she
might be there all day.
There were her clothes, piled high on her
chair and overflowing onto the floor. Assorted shoes. An umbrella from when
it rained on Tuesday. Library books. Magazines with pictures of adorable
teen-movie stars that Rebecca had lent her. Her piano music
from yesterday's lesson. And odds and ends of junk: nail polish
remover, cotton balls, a tennis-ball, wadded-up notes from Katy, rocks from rock
collection they were making for science, pencil stubs, gum wrappers. And about
twenty crumpled tissues.
The thing to do, Sam decided, was sort
everything into piles. A pile of dirty laundry, a pile of her
dresser drawers, a pile to throw away. That was how her father,
the organization man, would do it.
She sighed. It was conceivable she could be imprisoned in her room all week-end. She decided to paint her finger nails instead.
1) Was Sam the only child in the family?
2) Why was Sam punished?
3) What sign did Sam see on her doorknob?

5) Why did Sam think that it wasn’t fair?

9) What kinds of things were there on the floor?
10) What did she decide to do first?
11) What did she do at the end of the story?

13) What would you do if you were on Sam’s place?
14) Is it difficult for you to tidy up your room?

No Place like home
Today Vicky Brown came home from school at four o’clock. She watched TV for
half an hour. Then she did her homework. She’s working hard at the moment,
because she’s got exams soon. After dinner, while she was helping with the
washing up, she talked to her parents about a problem she has been having at
school.
It was a normal day, but it was the kind of day that makes Vicky (and
her parents) very happy. ”I can’t believe it”, says Vichy. ” Life is wonderful.
Four months ago I was living in a cardboard box under a railway bridge in
London”.
Last October Vicky ran away from home. How did it all start?”
I hated school. We always had so much work to do and I didn’t see the point of
it all. But it was worse at home. My parents didn’t understand me. It was all
“Do this!” “Don’t do that!” We only spoke to each other when we were arguing.
One day I just couldn’t stand it any more”.
On that October day, Vicky didn’t go to school.
She went to the station, put on some clothes she had, packed them in her
school bag, threw her uniform away and caught the train to London.
“At first it was really exciting. There were all the bright lights,
theatres and shops and some really interesting people. It was just like on the
telly. I had to sleep on the streets, but I didn’t mind. I was free – no
school, no homework, no parents.”
But soon there was no food and no money either. “Someone nicked my purse
about a week after I arrived. I couldn’t get a proper job, because I was only
15 and you have to be 16. I worked in a restaurant for a while, washing up.
That was really funny, because I’d always complained about doing the washing up
at home. I didn’t get much money, but at least it was warm”.
Then the restaurant closed down and Vicky was back on the streets again.
She was cold, hungry and miserable, but she survived until one night about a
week before Christmas. “I was walking down a street, when I looked into
someone’s front window. There was a girl there, just like me. She was
decorating a Christmas tree. I thought “If I was at home, I’d be decorating our
tree now”. Then I couldn’t help it. I just started crying. I sat down on the
pavement and cried and cried”.
Luckily for Vicky, the man who lived at the house, Mr Robinson, came home
while she was sitting there. He took Vicky into the house and Mrs
Robinson gave her a cup of tea and something to eat. “They were so kind. I told
them my whole story. They offered to pay for my ticket home, but I didn’t want
that. I thought my parents would be angry”.
But the next day she was back home. While Vicky was at their house, Mr
Robinson went next door and telephoned the police in Birmingham. Three hours
later, Vicky’s father arrived to collect her.
“It was the best Christmas present I’d ever had”, said Mrs Samson. “We’re
so grateful to the Robinsons for what they did”.

Political System of Ukraine
Ukraine is a sovereign state. It has its own territory, higher and local bodies of state power, government, national emblem, state flag and anthem.
In July, 1990, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Parliament, adopted the document of great importance — the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine. This document opened a new page in Ukraine's history, which leads to the construction of a democratic state based on the rule of law.
According to the Declaration only the Verkhovna Rada can speak on behalf of the whole Ukrainian people. No political party, public organization or separate person has the right to do this. The Declaration reads that Ukraine ensures supremacy of its Constitution on the territory of the country.
The way Ukraine passed from the adoption of the Declaration of the State Sovereignty to the adoption of its Constitution is slow and complicated. It is easily explained by the large-scale transformations in political and economic life.
In July, 1996, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the new Constitution of Ukraine. According to it Ukraine is a parliamentary republic with the presidential governing.
The higher body of state power is the Verkhovna Rada. It is one chamber parliament, which is presided over by the Speaker. The functions of the Verkhovna Rada are legislation and scrutiny of government activities. The Ukrainian government is headed by the Prime-Minister. The elections of the deputies to the parliament are held every four years. They are by secret ballot. All citizens aged 18 have the right to vote.
The President is elected every five years. He is the Head of State. He cannot be elected for more than two terms.
The Constitution of Ukraine is the main law in the country. It guarantees certain rights and freedoms to the Ukrainian citizens and determines their duties.
The process of creating new democratic state is complicated. But over a short period a new system of state administration, the National Armed Fore-Security Service, law enforcement authorities were created. Independent Ukraine is unswerving on its way to a democracy.
